“How to really captivate your audience”

Culture plays a huge role in consumer buying behavior. It will dictate what consumers value, what they relate to, and what they aspire to. Did you know that cruises will hire their entertainment on-board based on the cultural background of their guests? This is because a group may find physical comedy funny, while another group will be more likely to laugh at a joke they can relate to because it represents their family or childhood.

A friend of mine, who is a very well known comedian runs these big comedy events that he usually sells out because he has an established fandom that trusts that he will provide a show of their liking. He usually brings other entertainers to be part of the show. One time, he invited a great comedian who is part of a different ethnic group. His segment completely flopped with this audience. He was BOO-d. They failed to take into account what an important role culture plays in entertainment, especially in comedy.

If you’re building your brand as an entertainer, even if it’s not performance, it is crucial to understand what audience you are targeting, and how they are influenced by culture. Not only will this help establish your brand by creating a connection to your audience, but it will help you retain a community that trusts your product. So, do you know your audience?
